Treat those prices as street ranges, not fixed numbers. Both brands run near-constant sales, and Anycubic in particular has the Kobra 3 Max marked down hard while it pushes the newer Kobra 4, Kobra X, and Kobra S1 Max.

The Build-Volume Gap and What It Costs

Five times the volume is not a free upgrade. The Kobra 3 Max is a large, heavy machine on a gantry frame, and it wants a real chunk of bench. Printing well across a 420 mm bed also means the printer has to manage bed flatness, belt tension, and motion accuracy over a much longer travel, which is part of why Anycubic recommends a cruise speed of 300 mm/s instead of chasing the 600 mm/s headline. You will not print a 420 mm part at 600 mm/s and like the result.

The honest trade for that size is a lower bed temperature ceiling. The Kobra 3 Max tops out at 90 °C on the bed versus 100 °C on the A1, and both are open-frame, so neither is a serious ABS or ASA machine for large parts. Big ABS and ASA prints warp without a heated chamber, and Anycubic and Bambu both say as much in their own material. Plan around PLA, PETG, and TPU on either printer, with small ABS parts as the exception.

The A1's smaller bed is a feature as much as a limit for most people. A 256 mm bed heats evenly, holds flatness over time, and lets the motion system stay fast and accurate. If nothing you make is bigger than about 25 cm, you are paying for volume you will never use and giving up polish to get it.

Multicolor: AMS lite vs ACE Pro

Both printers reach four colors with their included unit, and both can in principle go to eight, but the details differ in ways that matter every time you print.

The Bambu AMS lite is the more mature system. It swaps filament cleanly, syncs profiles over RFID when you use Bambu filament, integrates tightly with Bambu Studio, and runs the purge and wipe routine that Bambu has tuned across the whole A1, P1, and X1 line. It is the closest thing to hassle-free multicolor at this price. The catch is the A1 supports only one AMS lite, ever, so four colors is your hard ceiling on this printer.

The Anycubic ACE Pro also handles four colors and supports a second ACE Pro for eight, which the A1 cannot match. On paper that is a win for anyone who wants more than four spools loaded. In practice the ACE Pro has had a rougher reputation for purge reliability and filament-path jams than the AMS line, and Anycubic Slicer Next profiles have taken longer to mature. If four colors is enough, the AMS lite is the more predictable choice. If you genuinely need eight colors in one print, the Kobra 3 Max is the only one here that can do it.

Wet filament jams both systems equally, so budget for dry boxes or a filament dryer no matter which you pick.

Software, Calibration, and Reliability

This is where the A1 pulls clearly ahead. Bambu ships the A1 with full-auto calibration that handles bed leveling, Z-offset, vibration resonance, pressure advance, and even belt tension before every print, and Bambu Studio carries hundreds of verified filament profiles. MakerWorld adds one-click printing from a phone. The common owner experience is that the first print is good, with no manual tuning, and that stays true for months.

The Kobra 3 Max runs Anycubic Slicer Next on top of the Kobra OS firmware. Slicer Next is built on OrcaSlicer, which is powerful and well-loved by tinkerers, and that openness is a real advantage if you want to push, macro, and customize. The cost is that out-of-box profiles are less refined, calibration is more hands-on, and you should expect to do flow-rate and pressure-advance tuning to match what the A1 does on the first try. Anycubic has improved fast through 2025 and 2026, but the brand still asks more of the operator than Bambu does.

Support follows the same pattern. Bambu's spare-parts availability and reputation for reliability are real, with a one-year warranty and 30-day price protection on the store. Anycubic's official support is thinner, though the large Reddit and forum community compensates a lot. One specific habit worth knowing: if you land on a Kobra OS version that prints well, pin it, because firmware updates on this brand have occasionally introduced regressions.

A Currency Note for 2026

Neither printer is the newest thing in its lineup. The A1 is still current on Bambu's store and still one of the default recommendations in the entry multicolor class, with the P2S sitting above it for people who want an enclosed CoreXY. The Kobra 3 Max is more clearly last-generation: Anycubic is actively pushing the Kobra 4 Combo, the Kobra X, and the Kobra S1 Max, and the Kobra 3 Max now shows up discounted and in the refurbished section of its own store.

That does not make the Kobra 3 Max a bad buy. The exception is print size. If you have a specific reason to need a 420 mm bed, full-size cosplay, oversized props, large functional parts, or dense batch printing, the Kobra 3 Max is the right tool and the A1 simply cannot do that job. Buy the Kobra 3 Max for the bed, accept the tuning that comes with it, and skip it if you do not have a concrete large-print use case.
