What a Slicer Does, in Two Sentences

A slicer converts a 3D model into the instructions your printer executes, layer by layer: where the nozzle moves, how fast, how hot, and how much plastic comes out. That instruction file is called G-code, and every choice the slicer makes on your behalf ends up visible on the finished part.

The software looks like a cockpit because it exposes forty or fifty controls. It has to serve people printing carbon-fiber nylon for drone arms and people printing a phone stand, in the same window. You are the second person. You need a fraction of those controls, and the fastest way to a good print is to let the community defaults carry you while you learn the handful that matter.

The Five Settings That Own Print Quality

Learn these and you can diagnose almost any print problem without touching the rest of the panel.

Layer height

Layer height decides both surface finish and print time, and it is the setting people toggle most. The working rule of thumb, repeated across every printer community, is around half your nozzle width: about 0.2mm on the 0.4mm nozzle that ships with nearly every machine. Drop to 0.12mm for display pieces and accept a longer print; jump to 0.28mm for functional brackets you will never look at again. Nothing else in the slicer changes a print's look as much per click.

Supports

Supports are sacrificial structure under overhangs, and the only real decision is where they touch. Slicer presets generate them automatically, but every one you accept adds cleanup and scars the surface it leans on. Turn them off for models with gentle overhangs, use them only where needed, and learn your slicer's "support blocker" tool before you learn anything else about them.

Wall count

Walls are the solid perimeter of a part, printed as loops. Two walls is the common default and fine for decorative prints. Bump a functional part to three or four walls and it gains most of its strength there, because perimeters are continuous lines while infill is a lattice. Strength per gram of plastic lives in the walls, not the fill.

Infill

Infill is the pattern inside the part, tuned by density. The defaults around 15 percent grid are right for most hobby prints. Raise it for parts that need heft or take impact, lower it for things that just need to not be hollow. Beginners routinely push infill to 40, 50, 60 percent chasing strength that walls would deliver for a third of the plastic.

Speed

Modern printers advertise 500 to 600 mm/s and ship with profiles that already print well below it on real parts. Your only speed decision, at first, is to slow the first layer, which nearly every profile does for you. If a print fails at speed, dropping the print speed 20 percent is a legitimate fix and one of the few reasons to open this setting at all in month one.

Here the answer is decided by your printer, not by you, and that is good news for a beginner. The strongest profiles, the ones maintained and tested by thousands of owners of your exact machine, live in the slicer that machine's community uses.

If you bought a Bambu Lab printer, the answer is Bambu Studio, full stop. It ships with verified filament profiles per model and connects to MakerWorld, where a model you download arrives with print settings already attached. FlashForge and Creality machines work in the same direction: their own software is built on an OrcaSlicer base, which tells you where the community's center of gravity sits.

For most other machines, install OrcaSlicer. It is the open-source slicer the enthusiast communities standardize on, its calibration helpers are the ones Reddit threads link when something prints badly, and its profile library covers the popular machines. Cura still works and remains what many older tutorials were written against, but it has become the legacy option: fewer fresh profiles, less community momentum. PrusaSlicer is excellent, and the obvious pick if you own a Prusa, since Prusa maintains and tests its own profiles the way Bambu does.

The rule that survives every update cycle: the best slicer for beginners is the one with the deepest preset support for the machine on your desk. Switching slicers does not make prints better. Never Start From a Blank Profile

Every slicer lets you build a print profile from zero, and it is the single most common self-inflicted wound of the first month. A blank profile means you are choosing nozzle temperature, cooling fan behavior, retraction, and acceleration for a machine you bought two weeks ago. The community profile for your printer encodes years of that experimentation.

The etiquette that experienced owners repeat: download or select the profile for your printer, pick the filament preset that matches what is on the spool, change only the five settings above, and print. The Settings Beginners Wring Their Hands Over

Temperature towers, retraction matrices, flow calibration, pressure advance. These are real tools and they matter, eventually, mostly after you switch to a second filament type or start chasing stringing on a machine that needs it. As a beginner you will burn a weekend on them and produce no parts.

The default filament presets in a maintained profile already embed sensible temperature and cooling values for PLA, which is what you will print for the first few months anyway. Print things. Is Cura still good in 2026?

It works, and it is stable, but it has slipped from default recommendation to legacy option. The community's fresh profiles, calibration tooling, and tutorial momentum have moved to OrcaSlicer, and even Creality's and FlashForge's first-party software is built on Orca. If you already know Cura there is no reason to leave; if you are starting now, start with what your printer's community maintains.

OrcaSlicer or Bambu Studio for a first slicer?

Match the machine. Bambu printers should run Bambu Studio, because its verified profiles and MakerWorld integration are part of what the printer costs. Owners of most other machines should run OrcaSlicer, which is the open standard the communities calibrate around. The two share a lineage, so nothing you learn in one is wasted in the other.

What layer height should a beginner use?
