What a Box Actually Changes

An enclosure does one physical thing: it traps air. That trapped air settles a few degrees above room temperature and stops the drafts that pull heat out of a part's outer layers mid-print. Warm, still air keeps a print's edges above the temperature where plastics shrink unevenly, and uneven shrinkage is the mechanism behind warped corners and split walls.

The Trade-Offs Nobody Mentions Until Later

Enclosure is not free quality. A sealed chamber warms the electronics bay along with the print, which is why better enclosed machines mount the power supply outside the chamber or derate it, and why cheap fully-sealed boxes age faster in warm rooms. Fumes move indoors with the box too: ABS and ASA release styrene while melted, and the carbon filters in enclosed printers reduce the smell and part of the particle load without removing the need for the ventilation the safety sheets call for.
